Olafur Arnalds

12 Tonar artist Olafur Arnalds and his string quartet perform two original compositions at Listahaskoli Islands (the Icelandic Academy of The Arts) in a concert room called Solvholl. The first is entitled Fok and the second Himininn er a hrynja en stjornurnar fara er vel. These pieces are not due for release until February 2008 so cheers to Olafur for the sneak preview.

Petur Ben sings two tunes from his debut solo album Wine for My Weakness. The first is the title track which he follows up with a barnstorming version of Something Radical. Sweet and vicious.

Hjaltalin cover Sprengjuhollin's Verum i sambandi sans lead singer and lyrics. As you see they nail it regardless. You can't keep a great group down. An interesting follow up to Sprengjuhollin covering compatriots Retro Stefson for their podcast. What a big Icelandic love in this is turning out to be. Shot at the band's rehearsal space in bassist Gudmundur Oskar's folk's garage.

Lay Low holds the title Best Female Artist from the 2006 Iceland Music Awards, and she showed us why at her main festival show at Reykjavik Art Museum. Also, her red dress was the prettiest we ever did see.

The mighty Mugison popped by with Petur Ben to play an old track and a couple from Mugison's soon to be released LP Mugi Boogie. First up they launch a twin acoustic guitar assault on a vintage Mugi's track, Murr Murr. According to the man they haven't done this version for years. Next up is a newie titled The Pathetic Anthem. Solid like brick. Vocals that strip paint off the ceiling. They end the set with a sexual song called Jesus Is A Good Name To Moan. An interview with the fella's will be posted soon...

Olof Arnalds performs a couple of exclusive live tracks from her astonishingly brilliant debut album Vio og Vio. She belts out Klara on the charanga and follows it with I Nyju Husi on a taped up borrowed guitar. A few days later we caught Olof performing Johnny Cash's That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day) at 12 Tonar. Find a better cover version anywhere and you'll be doing very well.

Saturday night was pretty hectic, with the cream of the airwaves musical offering being served and the biggest turnout of festival goers. We caught up with José Gonzales at a local café as well as the band Architechture in Helsinki, as well as got some opinions from Bart Blasengame, Stuart and the artists on the festival as it winds down. Tracks featured are Lovestain by José Gonzales and The Cemetery by Architecture in Helsinki. Stay tuned for Episode X, an episode featuring a few chats which didn't make it in the earlier episodes. In this episode, we tracked down artists Dr. Disco Shrimp, Hermigervill and Frank Murder. Among other things we got some thoughts from them on performing live, distributing music and the internet. We caught a glimpse of the troubadour Jojo as well, playing in Austurstraeti (east-street)

In the second episode we get some insight into the local musicians mindset. We meet up with the guys in the band Reykjavik which gave us a demo cd from which we play the track 7-9-13. In the end we inspect the vibe at the long line which is a common sight during Iceland Airwaves prime time.

In this first episode we go on a walkabout, chat to the locals and try to get the general feeling of the young people in iceland attending the festival. We play Sleepwork by Hermigervill, which was a big success at his concert on Nasa. At the end of the night we interview The Zuckakis Mondeyano Project at a rather interesting location. Sound quality in this podcast is a bit rough at times but we're getting the hang of our recorder.
